Girls to the Front!
In honor of Kathleen Hanna, original riot grrrl, avid feminist activist and frontwoman of bands such as Bikini Kill, Le Tigre and The Julie Ruin. Mayor Marty Walsh and punk-rock promoter turned chief of policy, Joyce Linehan, have hereby declared that today (April 9th, 2015) is to be celebrated as Riot Grrrl day in the city of Boston!
As a proud feminist and riot grrrl enthusiast, here's a rundown of five of my favourite femme lead songs in order to commemorate such an event. Let's take these celebrations worldwide.
First up is Bikini Kill with one of their most famous songs to date, Rebel Girl, this is the song that introduced me to the riot grrrl scene thus leading me to educate myself on the history and importance of feminism in the modern world. My second choice comes from Hole with Babydoll, say what you will about Miss Love and her private life but it's undeniable that she possesses huge musical talent. Next up is a band that I'm super eager to catch at this years Download festival, L7 with the instantly recognisable Shitlist. If you are lucky enough to be gracing the hallowed grounds of Donington this year be sure to catch this group of feisty femmes playing Sunday 14th on the Zippo encore (second) stage, who knows what stunt these gals may pull (Reading festival '92 anyone?).The Distillers continue to fly the flag on into the next century with their debut The Young Crazed Peeling, leading me on to my final choice, the original all girl rock band, the group who first paved the way for chicks to dominate the stage in an equally as rude and aggressive manner as our male alliances, The Runaways, with I Wanna Be Where The Boys Are.
How will you be spending your day?
